The Pumpkin Vase Hat Debacle

“Crafting with toddlers: where Pinterest meets comedy gold.” 🎃

It started as a picture-perfect fall afternoon. Crisp air, golden leaves, and the kind of sunlight that makes you believe anything is possible—including crafting a Pinterest-worthy pumpkin vase centerpiece with a toddler. Spoiler alert: the only thing we created was a new family inside joke and a very confused pumpkin.

There we were at the kitchen table, a proud little pumpkin hollowed out and ready for its floral debut. My toddler, armed with a plastic spoon and boundless enthusiasm, was “helping.” By “helping,” I mean relocating pumpkin guts to every corner of the room. Still, I thought, This is going well. (Famous last words.)

I turned my back for approximately five seconds—just long enough to grab a dish towel and, apparently, lose all control of the situation. When I turned back, there it was: my toddler grinning ear to ear, the pumpkin vase perched squarely on their head like some kind of autumn-themed crown.

“Look, Mommy, I’m a pumpkin king!” they declared, pumpkin juice dripping dramatically down their cheeks.

Here’s the thing about toddlers and hollowed-out pumpkins: once the pumpkin is on, they have zero intention of taking it off. Attempts to remove it were met with loud protests of, “No! It’s my hat! I’m the boss of fall now!” Meanwhile, the flowers we were supposed to arrange were strewn across the floor in a tragic floral massacre.

I’d like to say I stayed calm and gracefully handled the situation, but the truth is I laughed so hard I nearly fell over. And that only encouraged them unfortunately.

Lessons Learned

  1. Toddlers don’t see objects for their intended purpose. A pumpkin vase is just a hat waiting to happen.
  2. Pumpkin guts are the world’s most stubborn form of glitter. Days later, you’ll still find them in random places.
  3. When crafting with a toddler, forget the project plan. Just go with the chaos.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, the pumpkin vase never did become a centerpiece. Instead, it’s forever immortalized as a hilarious family memory—and a photo that will definitely come out at their wedding someday. Meanwhile, my toddler is still convinced they invented a new trend. “Everyone’s gonna wear pumpkin hats for Halloween!” Sure, kid. Dream big.

Final Thoughts?

If you’re a parent, you know that life with toddlers is unpredictable at best. But if you can embrace the chaos and laugh through the mess, every moment—even one involving a pumpkin hat—becomes a story worth telling.️
