Italian Stromboli

Italian Stromboli: The Rolled-Up Hero Your Dinner Table Needs

Move over, pizza! Stromboli is here to save the day. This Italian classic is like a calzone’s cooler cousin—stuffed with layers of meats, cheeses, and spices, then baked to golden perfection. It’s easy to make, easy to eat, and guaranteed to make you look like a culinary rockstar. Warning: it might disappear faster than you can say, “Mangia!”

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • All-purpose flour (for dusting)

For the Filling:

  • ½ cup marinara sauce (optional, for dipping)
  • 6 oz thinly sliced salami
  • 6 oz thinly prosciutto
  • 6 oz thinly sliced pepperoni
  • 6 oz thinly sliced ham
  • 6 slices of provolone cheese
  • 6 slices of American cheese
  • 1/4 cup of diced onion
  • 1/4 cup of diced tomato
  • 1/4 cup of sweet peppers
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

1. Preheat and Prep

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the pizza dough into a rectangle, approximately 12×14 inches.

2. Layer the Good Stuff

  • Start layering your fillings on the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges. Begin with the salami, followed by the pepperoni, prosciutto, and ham. Add the some of the marinara, the diced onions, tomatoes, and sweet peppers. Top it will the slices of cheese.
  • Sprinkle Italian seasoning and garlic powder evenly over the top for extra flavor.

3. Roll It Up

  • Carefully roll the dough into a tight log, starting from one long edge. Pinch the seams and tuck the ends under to seal everything inside.

4. Egg Wash and Bake

  • Transfer the stromboli to the prepared baking sheet, seam side down. Brush the top with the beaten egg to ensure a shiny, golden crust.
  • Using a sharp knife, make a few small slits on top to allow steam to escape.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the stromboli is golden brown and cooked through.

5. Slice and Serve

Let the stromboli cool for about 5 minutes before slicing into thick pieces. Serve with warm marinara sauce on the side for dipping.

Watch as your family or guests devour it and beg for seconds. Just remember to save yourself a slice before it’s all gone!
