Salisbury Steak

Salisbury Steak: The TV Dinner Classic, Now Extra Fancy

This isn’t your grandma’s frozen TV dinner—but it is the comfort food upgrade you didn’t know you needed. Salisbury steak, swimming in a rich mushroom gravy and served over creamy mashed potatoes, is the kind of meal that makes you feel like you’ve got your life together. Spoiler: It’s actually super easy to make, but you don’t have to tell anyone that part

Ingredients

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 is ideal for flavor)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp of Ketchup
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Steaks

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined (don’t overmix, or you’ll end up with tough steaks).
  • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties. Set aside.

2. Sear the Steaks

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside (don’t worry if they’re not fully cooked yet—they’ll finish in the gravy).

3. Make the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and mushrooms, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the onion-mushroom mixture and stir to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to get rid of the raw flour taste.
  • Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and let the gravy thicken, about 3-5 minutes.

4. Finish the Steaks

  • Return the patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the steaks are cooked through and tender.

5. Serve and Enjoy

Serve the Salisbury steaks over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, spooning plenty of that delicious gravy over the top. Pair with a veggie side for balance—or just dive straight into the carbs and meat party.

Dust off your TV tray and serve these Salisbury steaks while binge-watching your favorite retro sitcom. Just remember, unlike the TV dinner version, these won’t leave you wondering if you actually like Salisbury steak.
